Peahen on the Barn

We had about three inches of snow yesterday, maybe more it is hard to judge. Then we had ice rain down on it, then it snowed again, then ice rained down on that. Then it got warm enough for the tops of the snow to melt a little, then it froze again.

So by late yesterday afternoon the snow was crunchy underfoot.

And this morning it will  be even crunchier.

I just cannot imagine anything growing here anymore. This long, long cold winter feels like a lifetime. Like we are in Narnia or something.

Good morning. The barn is quiet now without the plonkers who calmly rode off to the abbatoir. The money they raised will go to paying for a good amount of feed for the farm. I am pleased with them, they reached a good weight and were sturdy healthy animals. Just the sheep and the cows and Sheila now. And of course the birds.

Pania found herself on top of the barn yesterday, she sat up there for quite some time in a rather bemused fashion, occasionally honking for a ladder.icy-snow-017

Tired of waiting she flew to the roof of the house then down into the garden .icy-snow-029

Like the chickens the peahens hate the snow, so she had to be encouraged to fly back to the barn and inside again.

I hope you all have a lovely day.

  1. How I wish you could mail me some snow, so I could put it in my hands to see what it feels like. Think I am one of few who have never seen snow before. Oh well.
Have a lovely week ahead C.

  2. Can I admit that I’m sad to see the plonkers go? I know they are doing their job (and trust me, I love me some pork!) but they are the last of Charlotte, so my heart is a little broken. It seems to me that Pania of Narnia needed to be on top of the barn to be as close as possible to whoever is responsible for your horrid weather, to honk at them to stop this right now! She looks very self-righteous and angry, even muttering to inanimate objects back down on the frozen earth. “Can you believe the nerve…?!”

    • Of course you can admit that. If it was easy we would have no respect for our food and eat way too much of it. And don’t forget Charlotte still has a big strapping daughter living with a friend of mine if that is any help. Pania does look like she is in quite the mood! c

    • weirdly mine are only noisy at certain times of the year, they have been very quiet all winter..but in the summer it is a different story.. welcome to the lounge of comments.. arthur in the garden.. c

  3. Pania is gorgeous. I see her as a grand performer. I’m glad she made an appearance – a classy bit of entertainment in your white world. She looks a bit perturbed at the weather, yet she honks, singing and performing despite a scant audience. She even wore all of her finery!

It snows here this morning with promise of more snow and ice throughout the coming week. I have already donned my Sorels, and scooped a path for the chin gang to venture out to do their morning business. Later I’ll trek down the slope c a r e f u l l y and see about corn and chow for the deer. The birds are gathered around the feeders and we’ve had a constant fly-in at the heated bird bath on the back porch. It is just beautiful out there this morning. Not a puff of wind!

  4. We are having a tiny little break from winter, sun is shining and it is 56F!! I am out cleaning all the drinking water containers for the birds, hens, dogs and cats. Even racked up some leaves. Have to stop often as the ‘flu’ took it out of me and still coughing and no energy. Still I have a huge pot on the stove of loads of oxtails, carrots, onions, celery and peppers, simmering for 24 hours to give me the base for oxtail and barley soup, plus left over will be strained for broth.
I do hope the vet can fix Sheila’s leg for her. At least with all the cold, I should think infection would have a hard time taking hold
    Hugs

  5. That is some seriously thought provoking weather. I imagine you really have to get your head around acceptance and seeing the beauty of it and it’s power to create a new routine. Thank god you have your love of words, two legged family and four legged friends. Stay warm on the inside.. 😉 wendy

  6. I didn’t open my email until just now – nearly 7pm! I wanted to tell you that I have a need to see what is going on with you every day. I really appreciate your regularity!

Herself does look so dainty with the pointed trotter, poised to break the ice for another perfect step.

The red stems of the bare plants in your second to last photo give us some colourful respite from the snow!

I have Snowdrops up and blooming – no snow, just the early flowers – and expect my crocus to appear soonish. All hope is not lost underneath your white mantle!

  7. Do you suppose Pania is looking for the Duke? I miss the plonkers, too. It is always sad for me to see an animal I have raised give its life; but that is the way it goes. We know that they had a good life with us. Sorry to hear about Sheila’s wound. Do you use Red Kote or Blue Kote? Don’t need infection and compromised immune system at breeding season. Just listen to me….it is as if I lived on your farmy, too. Still no snow here….just very cold and dry. In one way it is nice, but we will suffer with the drought this summer. No snow in our mountains, either. The more snow you have now, the more flowers and grass you will have this spring…..yes?

    • I have an antibiotic powder but up until today it was actually dry and scabby, unfortunately under that it was festering, it may improve now that I can get some medicine straight onto the wound..pretty gross.. though getting her pregnant is more of a worry.. c

  8. I have been doctoring a sick husband for the last 6 days and my 6-yr-old decided to join in, so I’ve been doctoring her for the last 3 days. As such, I’ve been staying home a lot, but today I had to get out and make a run to the store. That meant I had to shovel the driveway. Our driveway is longer than most here in town. Our house is “L” shaped so instead of our driveway running straight from the road to the garage (typically between 20 – 25 ft), it is offset and runs up toward the house and then makes a curve into the garage. Our driveway is more like 40-50 ft and we shovel it my hand. Let me say, it’s a much tougher workout when the snow has a sheet of ice sitting on top of it.

Unfortunately, it sounds like we’re in for more winter weather in a couple days, but spring will one day arrive as it does every year.

    • Good god, what a a lot of work, that snow was terribly heavy today..I hope everyone is feeling better and you don’t get sick yourself. when that spring comes we are going to be laughing with relief, I feel permanently hunched from cold.. take care deb.. c

  9. Spring has arrived here, in little ways… snowdrops, catkins, hellebores etc…. so you won’t be far behind…. then you’ll catch up and overtake I shouldn’t wonder 🙂
