Ice, Ice everywhere and not a block for my drink

Thank you for all yesterdays excellent comments re: printing Sheila’s calender. I have some wonderful avenues to explore now, in my search for ways for Sheila to make some pin money to buy extra feed and maybe outfit a new summer area for her in the Rat House.  Mama and the girls are living in there now until the grass shows. It is gloriously sunny all morning and very sheltered.

Daisy is due in just over two weeks.  And so cold yesterday that her tears were freezing on her cheeks. 10-days-old-007

Queenie would like to remind us that she is also due to have her calf at the beginning of April.

Queenie has always been such a round cow that honestly it is hard to tell if she really is pregnant or not.  April might be a better month for calving though. 10-days-old-002

Marcel was 10 days old yesterday. 10days-012

And celebrated by sleeping most of the day with his rather formidable Boo Nanny.10-days-004

Do you remember that a week or so ago we had a few days above freezing, which melted some of the snow. Then of course it froze again. Now we are surrounded in fields of ice. Hard bitter unrelenting ice. The walks are even more dangerous than ever.

10-days-old-025 Below is the Creek that is really a Ditch. In fact Our John’s Great-Grandfather dug this ditch to drain the land, it was swampland until then.  John has inherited a little of the land across this ditch but we need to find a way across so we can take it out of the rented/ cropping cycle and farm over there. At the moment we have to drive all the way around on the road, then cut across someone else’s bridge and through their yard. Our house is just out of sight; screen left. Anyone got a bridge for sale?  A big bridge?

This is where I am going to sow the wild flowers this spring.  Along the banks of this Creek that is really a Ditch.

I hope you all have a lovely day.

Your friend on the ever changing farmy,

  1. Search Metal Bridges for Sale – they make farm bridges that just get plonked down on-site…I looked at some a few years back, but don’t remember where I saw them…
We need a line of Sheila t-shirts – with captions – to go along with the calendars…That was my first thought of the morning, believe it or not. If you do them, I’m in! 🙂

  2. We have a huge canal system in my area for summer irrigating. I have land on both sides of the ditch but the really old wooden bridge crossing to the “other” side fell in long ago and my only way to get there was driving around the back another 3-4 miles. The canal maintenance company needed to do some work on the canal this winter when there was no water in it and had to use my road to get to it. I bartered with them to come up with a bridge for me in exchange for access across my land. They are going to use an old semi-bed with side rails welded on for the bridge. Maybe something like that would work for you?

  3. I have never seen a sheep with such a smiley face. It’s infectious! I don’t know, these days you can get a flat-pack anything. Do you think that Ikea might do a flat-pack bridge!!!

  4. OH what a sweet face Marcel has.

So the Creek that is a Ditch – would that be a Critch? Happy Thursday – prayers for warmer weather there.

  5. Marcel has very long legs and neck 🙂 Do you have Giraffes out there on the Prairie?? 🙂 I think I heard London Bridge was for sale a while ago … Laura

      • no , it was just on very low, as cold as it is I keep it running very low so the lamb does not get too hot and to conserve wood. But he WILL still race over to it if i forget to make the furniture fence to keep him out… c

    • Morning, Sharyn, first i am going to plant a good number of trees andng but hopefully this winter a good cover crop.. it takes cash though, as you know land is one thing but cash for fences and seed and all the rest means sending John back to work!.. c

  6. Ice, I understand. We had a horrid blizzard last week with rain before the snow. While ice and snow are finally melting from roads, ice still coats sidewalks, driveways and parking lots. I shuffle across surfaces for fear of falling.

  7. a friend of mine looked in paper for used I beams,we used them to build a bridge across a 40 ft creek.we poured a cement cap on top of the beams to drive across,he worked at a sawmill, so luckily we could use log skidders to place beams

  8. I was going to say an ex-REME Bailey bridge would do the job nicely, but as you’re in the States… an ex-US Army Bailey bridge – wonder where you’d find one of those looking for a home?
