Yesterday was hot again. Summer hat and sunscreen hot. But today is promising a cool, cloudy slow drift down from the Gypsy Summer heat and freedom for the new Brown Bobby. Our autumn rains should come along soon but for the meantime we have those clear warm dry skies of an early autumn. But cooler.
The weather was too good to keep the adopted brown bobby inside so I let him out into the field with the others. If you did not know already I call all the calves bound for the beef herd Bobby.
Up to now he has been in a pen next to Lady, acclimating and talking to the others through the fence but the weather is so beautiful that it seemed cruel to keep him from the pleasure of lolling about under the trees with the others, so out he went.
Alex does nothing BUT loll about under the trees.
Twice when I did not have my camera I came across Inky and Brown Bobby sleeping together in the shade under the trees. Maybe they will be joined by another little calf soon – who knows. I never count my chickens before they are hatched.
Lady is right through the fence, under the same trees but still up on the concrete pad. She has two small fields at her disposal but neither are particularly rich and she eats mainly dry grass hay. This is working for her belly (we have had three scary episodes of bloat in the last few weeks) so I am staying with this regime until further notice. At milking time she is working her way through the last of the eggplants, bell peppers and over ripe tomatoes. She loves them all especially when chopped up and served on her milking platter. I pick buckets of them for her and the pigs every day.
We are getting into pear season now, too. The pigs are enjoying those. Black Walnuts next. They eat well, my pigs!
I hope you have a lovely day.

They all eat well!
Morning Mad!
Lady’s very own version of ratatouille!
Giggle!!!! I love it.
She loves eggplant!
Do they eat the veggies raw daily? Or do you cook them up? It seems I remember saying you cook them up, so I’ve been doing that with our extra eggplants, and both pigs and chickens love it!!! 🙂
The pigs will always eat them cooked and sometimes eat them raw – then chickens eat them raw though and the eggs i cook for the pigs.
Oh – walnuts – red noses on the not so little piggies! Ah, if I had to be a cow – or pig – I would want to be on your farm! They eat so very well. Little Brown Bobby is a cutie pie.
He is a nice looking calf..
Lil’ Inky is a lovely warm shade in the sun, more sepia ink than black. I’d like to come back as a dairy cow in Miss C’s herd, please, or better still, one of the Hereford sows, so I wouldn’t have to worry about my waistline…
Inky is a deep chocolate brown and then that washed out brown in the sun- such a lovely shade..
I love the coloration of the newest little bobby. His coloring reminds me of a Texas longhorn.
I love those beasts – and their horns are magnificent
I wish so much I could send you all of the black walnuts here, which are falling from the trees now. And I would send you pecans too… won’t be long and they’ll be falling as well. Looks like the wildlife will have a big feast with nuts this year.
I am surprised you don’t have wild pigs with all that bounty
We do have them. I just haven’t had time to write about the damage done. So far it’s minimal. They’ve been coming in during night hours, so we’ll have to see about building a trap.
All sounds calm and peaceful.
It was this morning – a lovely morning
Was just noticing his face… Is he part Jersey?
Although we are not sure of his origins he is way too tall to be part jersey – he is a dairy cross of some kind maybe with a beef – i am not sure.. we will see how he grows . however he is a big sturdy boy
So glad Inky has somebody to “hang” with; )
Yes..
There have been times that I have looked at a bowl of pigs dinner and wished I had a nice salad like that in my fridge 🙂 Laura
They do love their fresh food
We are getting that false summer as well but the autumn weather is returning Friday. Weather is the thing I build my days on as well. Keeping good thoughts for you there. Time to move here too. I do not know how you do it all without falling into exhaustion. I get tired just reading about your day. Maybe I should start reading your posts at the end of the day for quicker sleep. 🙂
Good thinking! I know i could not WRITE them at the end of the day..
The sun dappling on both cows (Inky and her mom) shows such delicious colors! Beautiful photo!
There was a golden quality to yesterday’s light
Nice to see such happy looking animals.
beautiful article. love to read your articles may i never relent on reading your blog. blessings
I wonder what mischief the younger generation is planning: life is too boring by half just lying under the trees . . .
