New little golden Easter balls of fluff.

Another set of new arrivals have come to the Farmy.

And are under a warm lamp in the basement.  Sleeping.

Where no cats are allowed for a while.

These chickens will be handled often and will come to the old folks home with TonTon and I on ‘Celi’s Travelling Farmy Day’ later in the month.  So everyone can have a hold.

They will eventually join the laying flock.

Happy Easter.

Good morning. What a lovely day!  It is dawning fine and clear and sunny this morning.

Yesterday TonTon and I zoomed about in the little cooking oil car and after spending a lovely morning at the Retirement home in one town, we drove to another town and both went into the feed store and picked up the chickens,  then we sped over to another town  and collected a very bad tempered Mary’s cat from the vet. He is not accepting my apology.  He will not concede that such a thing had to be done.  And spent the afternoon crouched under the snowball bush, hissing and roaring at any cat who came to say hullo.

Once we all got home after navigating the closed roads I felt like I had driven everywhere twice and that will do until next Friday.

Later yesterday Ton and I  gently separated Mia and Mama, so that I can manage Mama’s feed a bit better. I think Mama has been eating Mia’s portion as well. We need to keep Mama’s weight within reasonable bounds.  Plus we must be getting close now.  And Mia keeps her mother walking.  Mia has to keep me in sight so she moves from gate to gate  as I work my way around the farm.   And of course Mama follows.

Today The Duke of Kupa has his little gate opened.  I shall open two other gates creating a corridor out to the South side of the barn. It is the warm side and as you know borders the drive and the gardens. That way if the peacock does peep out he will not have a thousand pound cow peeping back at him! And I am hoping he will allow Peghorn to show him around the barn.

He is still very very quiet. But eats everything except oats ( apparently that is peasant food) and navigates the perches in his room with great dignity.  We will see what happens next.  He is ahead of schedule but he seems very settled. If we do this slowly I do not think he is a flight risk!

Good morning. I hope you are enjoying a lovely weekend.

  1. Baby chicks are so lovely — and cats are not to be trusted with them! It has been a strange spring here in northern California: at the Farmers’ Market this morning there was asparagus (you have that!), only one flat of snow peas, which got snapped up immediately, a few green strawberries, artichokes — nothing like the bounty we usually see by Passover and Easter. We are eating leek and feta quiche, augmented by roasted peppers from the jar. I hope you have a quiet weekend — unless you want those lambs born today or tomorrow.

  2. You tricked my brain! I paused over the photo, trying to grasp what on earth could be that perfectly round and so hairy! Burrs! I cried…then wondered if your prairie lands even has burdock.

    That chick looks so healthy!

    Well done, Sterling Moss!

  3. Beautiful chicks and am am sure they will become very friendly. A lot of our hens will jump onto my lap or shoulder (although this does run quite a high “poo down the shoulder” risk!) because they are used to being handled! Chickens are such entertaining little creatures!

    • Oh I put marbles in their water bowl so they do not get too wet, chickens tend to hurl themselves straight into the water, this way it has shallow spots and they can get the water from between the marbles.. they drink quite a bit of water.. c

  4. Even though I do not like chickens at all, I can appreciate chicks and can well remember when the mailman delivered them each spring to our rural Minnesota mailbox. Thanks for bringing back these memories via your images and words.
